The slogan for the house paint company Sherwin Williams is ‘Cover the Earth’. It is simultaneously bold and proud, short-sighted, American, damning and imperialistic. I use house paint for its versatility as a medium and as a symbol of our collective appetite for the domestication and control of both nature and each other, as we proliferate and ‘cover the earth’.
I inspect the concept of appetite as I paint vibrant and absurd scenes and portraits of the human spirit clashing against the natural world. We dominate the wilderness and our environment faster than we can understand its powerful reactions, and as technology accelerates human progress at breakneck speeds, I explore and interpret our destructive and aloof relationship to this mysterious world we inhabit. In my work I attempt to capture the natural beauty, humor, and wonder intertwined with the struggles and sorrow around us. My paintings are always untouched by computers - as technology escalates, so does my desire for traditional mediums of expression. It is my refuge from the oversaturation of new products and devices.
